A look at the first night of the 2010 NFL free agent frenzy:
Panthers Part Ways With Delhomme, Others The Carolina Panthers cut Jake Delhomme late Thursday, according to the associated press. Delhomme’s agent, Rick Smith, confirmed the move and said Delhomme would wait until Friday to talk to reporters. It signals the Panthers intend to go with Matt Moore as starting qiarterback. The Panthers also released veteran defensive tackle Damione Lewis on Thursday in a move that sheds another $5 million in payroll. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Carolina Panthers have released DT Ma'ake Kemoeatu.
Lions Land Burleson; Trade For DT ESPN.com's John Clayton reports Detroit Lions WR Nate Burleson agreed to a five-year deal worth $25 million, according to a source. The deal includes $11 million in guarantees. The Lions have also agreed upon a deal with the Browns, which will send defensive tackle Corey Williams to Detroit, a deal that could have huge ramifications on what the team opts to do with the second overall pick, according to Chris Mortensen.
Jets Acquire Cromartie A few hours before the NFL's free agency period began, the Jets improved their secondary in a big way by agreeing in principle with the San Diego Chargers to acquire talented but troubled cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Thursday night. League sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter the Jets will give the Chargers a 2011 third-round draft pick that could turn into a second-round pick.
Chargers Have Change of Heart Darren Sproles is staying. Jamal Williams is leaving. The Chargers changed their mind on Sproles, opting Thursday morning to place a first-and-third tender on the dynamic running back and kick returner. Williams, a Pro Bowl nose tackle who had been with the Chargers for 12 seasons, was released.
Pennington Deal Hits A Snag The anticipated re-signing of Chad Pennington with the Miami Dolphins has been snagged by the veteran quarterback's desire to have a no-trade clause in his contract, according to team and league sources. Pennington and the Dolphins were expected to reach an agreement on a one-year $2.5 million contract on Thursday afternoon before the stumbling no-trade block, according to another team interested in the quarterback.
Miles Austin Top Priority For Dallas If a team wants to make a run at Miles Austin in restricted free agency, they now know they would have to part with their first- and third-round picks for the Pro Bowl wide receiver. The tender is worth $3.168 million.
Coles Tenure In Cincy Over One day before the new NFL year starts, the Bengals wasted no time Thursday when they moved past the Laveranues Coles' signing and cut the 32-year-old wide receiver. That may or may not put the Bengals in play in the unrestricted free agent market for a receiver in bidding that starts Friday.
Ravens Tender RFAs Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports the Baltimore Ravens gave a low tender to restricted free-agent LB Antwan Barnes. The team would receive a fourth-round draft pick as compensation should another team sign Barnes and the Ravens refuse to match the offer. The Ravens also gave second-round tenders to restricted free agents OG Marshal Yanda and WR Mark Clayton.
Chiefs Ante Up Vrabel Linebacker Mike Vrabel agreed to contract terms with the Chiefs hours before he was to become an unrestricted free agent. Vrabel joined the Chiefs last year as part of the trade that also brought quarterback Matt Cassel from New England.
Cardinals Release Rolle; New York Bound? The Cardinals have released started free safety Antrel Rolle but hope to re-sign him in free agency. Rolle was due a $4 million signing bonus by March 5 and his salary was due to increase to $8 million. Rumors out of New York have him landing with the Giants.
Charlie Frye Offered Original Tender Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders restricted free-agent QB Charlie Frye has been given an original-round tender worth $1.226 million. The Raiders would receive a third-round pick as compensation if another team signed Frye and they refused to match the offer. * * * * * *The All Access Football ninth annual 2010 NFL Draft Bible Package Is Now Available!
