Detroit Signs Battered Tackle

David Elfin, of The Washington Times, reports the Detroit Lions have signed unrestricted free-agent OT Jon Jansen to a one-year deal. He will earn the veteran minimum salary.

Mancini’s Take: The ‘Skins washed their hands of the ole Wolverine, who in addition to being an injury waiting to happen, struggled mightily in pass protection last year. Jansen checked into OTA’s significantly slimmer after melting off about five percent of his body fat, but the organization clearly identified him as the weak link of the offensive line. I don’t know if I totally agree with the move since the 33-year-old was only making $1.35 million and he’s still a good run blocker. He could’ve served Washington as a reserve or could’ve been kicked inside to guard. Well, one man’s loss is another’s gain with Detroit only paying Jansen $845,000 to mentor right tackle Gosder Cherilus and chip in when needed. The Lions can really benefit from his experience in a reduced role, Ross man.

Mandel's Take: I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the Lions are making good moves this off-season and this is one of them. Sure, Jansen's pass blocking leaves much to be desired, but the fact of the matter is the Skins weren't in a position to get rid of a relatively inexpensive player that could provide cover on the offensive line. Detroit isn't going to rely on him to be "the man", and got themselves some cheap depth. Jansen can play guard or tackle and might provide a kick in the behind to Cherilus, who clearly needs just that. I know there is only one direction for the Lions to go after a winless season, but the worm seems to be turning...albeit slowly.
