Crazy Al Cringes as DHB Goes Down Again

The Conta Costa Times reports that Darrius Heyward-Bey re-injured his right hamstring during Wednesday's practice. DHB, who originally suffered the injury in early May, grabbed his hamstring on an out pattern and let out an "audible groan." He'll reportedly be sidelined until training camp.

Mancini’s Take: This is a problem that may linger into the preseason. DHB can’t afford to stand on the sideline s when he has so much to learn and improve upon. While the former Terrapin is an amazing deep threat, he’s still lacking in the area of route running, particularly getting in and out of his cuts. In addition, his hands are suspect (as already proven in practice) and his blocking needs work. Crazy Al took a big gamble drafting the ultimate boom-or-bust player with the seventh overall pick, and it could very well end up biting him in the rear end. I’m not breaking any news here, but many people’s doubts about this pick are seemingly coming to fruition. Is it too early to panic, Mandel?

Mandel's Take: You've all heard of RUN DMC...ladies and gentlemen--I give you Audible Groan DHB! I hate to say we told you so...actually, that's not even true. I love to say we told you so, especially to Al Davis. Heyward-Bey relies on speed, and any injury to his legs is a major set-back. The ridiculous thing about this is the fact that his hamstring has been bothering him for weeks. Why not just sit him out for a month? This is your first-round pick, one who you're relying upon for big things--how do you just throw him out there when his biggest asset is anything but 100 percent? No, it's not too early to panic. This is precisely what the nay-sayers expected...we just expected it to happen in week three, not practice.
