NFL: Cassel Out; Thigpen To Start

Jason Cole, of Yahoo! Sports, reports Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel (knee) has a strained MCL in his right knee and he could miss two to four weeks, according to a team source. The injury is not expected to require surgery, but he could miss the team's Week 1 game. Quarterback Tyler Thigpen would start if Cassel is unable to play.

The Skinny: This really shows the value of the backup quarterback position. In many cities, the backup is the most popular person on the team, and this is why. The real issue comes in week one if Thigpen can win the game, then Cassel struggles when he returns. After the massive investment on a player such as Cassel, if the backup is better, Scott Pioli could be in a lot of trouble.
