Wide receiver Isaac Bruce is postponing retirement for another season with the San Francisco 49ers. Bruce, the second-leading receiver in NFL history with 14,944 yards, informed 49ers coach Mike Singletary on Wednesday of his decision to return for his 16th NFL season.
Mandel's Take: So Ralph, did you hear this news early at the Rev Convention? I can't begrudge Bruce another season. The man led his team in receptions and yards last year and has been nothing short of a Pro's Pro throughout his career. He won't be as productive this season, but a team could do a lot worse than having a guy like Bruce in its lockerroom. Rev, preach on your fellow man of the cloth.
Mancini's Take: I have nothing but love for my fellow reverend, Rosstradamus. Here's a receiver who's been a star on the field and off it. When was the last time you've heard the good reverend badmouth his quarterbacks or any other of his teammates? When did you ever hear of Bruce being arrested for domestic violence or driving drunk? The answer to both questions is NEVER. You think Cleveland regrets not going after the former Ram last year and ending up Donte Stallworth instead? Bruce probably won't play as much next season due to San Francisco's heavy commitment to the running game, which will result in less multiple-receiver sets. But when he's out there, he'll still be a factor thanks to his wonderful route-running ability. If you think he's done, look up how he undressed Buffalo's Leodis McKelvin last season on a 12-yard slant-and-go route, which resulted in six points.
