All Access: Marvin Harrison To Retire?

According to Peter King of SI.com, Harrison, 36, is retiring. Via his Twitter feed, King writes: "I've been told reliably that Marvin Harrison's not playing anymore. Knee hurts. Can't get healthy like the old Marvin." Harrison caught 60 passes for 636 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Mancini's Take: It's all for the best. I can respect Harrison for not trying to desperately hang on and risk becoming a total non-factor on another team with a lesser quarterback at the helm. Of couse, there were whispers out there that had Indy re-signing Harrison, but it's all a moot point now. Number 88 will go down as one of the most consistent and technically-sound wide outs in the history of the game. He goes out just like he came in with very little fanfare. Is Harrison one of the top-10 or top-15 receivers of all time, Mandel?

Mandel's Take:
He's absolutely in the top 15, Rev. People sometimes treat the word "consistency" as sort of a negative, implying that the player with that label simply hung around and performed at a pretty good level for a long period of time. But that's not how Rev and I are using it here. Harrison was indeed consistent, but anyone who disputes his greatness need only look at his accomplishments: He's second all-time in receptions and holds the record for receptions in a season with 143. Want more? He's the only player in history to have four consecutive 100 plus-reception seasons AND the only player to post four seasons with over 1,400 yards receiving. There are many more records next to his name, and oh yeah, he also has a ring. Are his stats a bit skewed because of Peyton Manning? You can say that...and you can also say that Manning's have been improved by playing with Harrison. Truly an all-time great.
