NFL: Surgery Awaits Mathis

Jaguars.com reports that Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis will need surgery to repair a finger injury during the club's Week 7 bye. "There's potential there for an issue with his hand," coach Jack Del Rio said.

Mancini’s Take: Mathis is the only player in the Jaguars secondary that even closely resembles a shutdown corner. Needless to say, his absence from the lineup would be catastrophic. As things currently stand, no team has allowed more passes to be completed against them than the Jaguars with 150 so far, while only two teams have given up more first downs via the pass than Jack Del Rio’s group. Mathis’ injury reportedly isn’t season- ending, but he will be limited in the way he bumps receivers at the line of scrimmage. In addition, his condition may prevent him from making plays on the ball. The veteran is a natural-born gambler that is one of the best at making plays after an interception. This injury not only limits him individually, but further cripples an ailing defense.
