NFL: Mawae on the Comeback Trail

Titans C Kevin Mawae (elbow surgery) still isn't practicing but has maintained his conditioning, reports the Nashville Tennesean.

The Skinny: The Titans have caught a glimpse of life with the 38-year-old center, and it isn’t pretty! The first-team offense has struggled to move the ball on the ground in Tennessee’s first two exhibition games. Chris Johnson, in particular, has been unable to find room to roam by totaling a paltry 26 rushing yards on 15 carries thus far. On the bright side, the extraordinary blocker is reportedly running, and has, in fact, recently outsprinted all his fellow linemates in practice. The ageless Mawae is a master at moving to the second level while pulling and trapping for his running backs. He’s an anchor, he sets the tone, and provides good energy. That’s a package that reserve center Leroy Harris seemingly can’t provide yet despite his incredible strength. It’s also worth mentioning that right tackle David Stewart hasn’t played either. Look for him to also make a difference with his physical run blocking once he gets back in the saddle. With those two in place, coach Jeff Fisher’s crew won’t look that different from last year’s offensive line, which paved the way for the seventh-ranked rushing attack with 2,199 yards.
