NFL: Maroney Puts on his Dancing Shoes

The Providence Journal reports that Laurence Maroney’s return to the starting lineup last Thursday did not go as well as Tom Brady’s in New England‘s 27-25 victory over Philadelphia. He carried six times for 14 yards, with a best of 5 yards. Perhaps more important than the numbers, according to Paul Kenyon and Shalise Manza Young, Maroney did not look as aggressive as he might have. As has been his practice in the past, he seemed to take a little extra time dancing, or looking for a hole, rather than driving straight ahead.

The Skinny: Ho-hum…yawn! What a shocker! It’s Maroney again with his Gregory Hines routine. The coaching staff has been beating it into his head to attack his lanes quickly rather than tap his feet and wait for something bigger and better to open up. It’s become painfully obvious that Maroney, with the exception of a couple of decent performnces, has never really adapted to the pro game, which is very fast and will swallow up backs that are too busy doing the Electric Slide behind the line of scrimmage. Look for Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor to outperform the dancing queen in 2009.
