NFL: Lions Win Rights to Underachiever

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun Times reports that the Bears missed out yesterday when they put in a waiver claim for defensive end Turk McBride, a former second-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs. McBride, who didn't fit the Chiefs' new 3-4 scheme, was cut loose and the Bears turned out to be one of three teams that placed a claim for him. He was awarded to the Detroit Lions, who are first in the waiver system by virtue of their 0-16 season last year.

Mancini’s Take: McBride reunites with defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham in the Motor City where he should be a better fit in a 4-3 scheme. But then again, the former second-round pick has done little to nothing to warrant his lofty draft status back in 2007. The 6’2” 287-pound New Jersey native has proven to be ineffective in stopping the run as an interior lineman. Moving him outside at end has also proven to be a failed experiment. That quickness we saw with the Tennessee Volunteers seems to be long gone. It’s up to Cunningham to bring it out of McBride. If it doesn’t happen this time, the young lineman may have to explore coaching opportunities or get into some other line of work. Maybe Tatum Bell can hook him up with a j-o-b selling cell phones, just a thought.
