NFL: Edwards Looking Razor Sharp

AP sports writer John Wawrow observes that Buffalo’s Trent Edwards has plenty to be happy about with the new-look, no-huddle offense that’s working to near perfection for Buffalo. the Bills’ passing game was nearly unstoppable and got plenty of help from an opportunistic defense in a 27-20 victory over Chicago Saturday night. Edwards went 10 of 10 for 79 yards to key an efficient outing for the entire Bills quarterback corps, which went a combined 29 of 34 for 265 yards and a touchdown. Jay Cutler, on the other hand, went He went 5 of 10 for 64 yards and an interception on a poorly underthrown pass up the left sideline that was picked off by Leodis McKelvin. Cutler nearly threw another interception, but cornerback Reggie Corner dropped the ball that hit him squarely in the chest.

The Skinny: Undaunted by the absence of Terrell Owens, the third-year triggerman calmly surveyed his options, hit his check-down receivers, and even ran for a first down when he felt the rush (are you listening, Kellen Clemens?). The one concern I have about Edwards is his offensive line. He’s operating behind a totally renovated front five, which includes two rookies at guard. The Stanford grad showed signs last year by increasing his yards-per-attempt average from 6.06 to 7.22, and should be even better with new toys at his disposal. In that same game, Cutler made some of the same mindless throws he made last year. On the McKelvin pickoff, he defiantly rifled a low-percentage pass into coverage with a host of defenders ready to pounce on him in the pocket. He’s a cocky son of a gun who thinks he can make every throw in the book. Let’s see how brave he is when the winds start blowing in Chi-town as the season wears on.
