The Denver Broncos are hoping their recent signings will be enough to bolster their offense.
The Broncos have announced they have reached an agreement with unrestricted free-agent WR Jabar Gaffney on a four-year deal worth $10 million. The Broncos have also announced they have signed unrestricted free-agent RB Correll Buckhalter (Eagles). However, there was a snafu with J.J. Arrington and he has reportedly not signed with Denver, as was previously reported. The recent arrest of wide receiver Brandon Marshall could throw a monkey wrench into their plans, as Marshall could be facing a league suspension to begin the season.
Mancini's Take: Gaffney is a quality third receiver, who's an upgrade over Brandon Stokley or Darrell Jackson at this stage of the game. Buckhalter, on the other hand, is strictly a short-yardage role player. Denver shouldn't expect too much out of him and probably won't especially when you consider all the work he's had done to his knees. I like the Arrington signing if the Broncos do indeed bring him in. He's young, fast and elusive. The arrival of Buckhalter and Arrington probably signals the end of Selvin Young's career in the Mile High City. By the way, I'd still like to see Ryan Torian get a shot of becoming the number-one back, but that may not happen if Denver signs Derrick Ward. How do you see things shaking down in your home away from home, Rosstradamus?
Mandel's Take: Well, I can tell you this--those fans won't settle for another season of failure. They're rabid, knowledgable and understand what this team needs to win. Correll Buckhalter isn't it. Don't get me wrong, the former Husker is a nice running back...when he's actually running. He is 30 years old and gets hurt ALL the time--hasn't Denver had enough of injured running backs? Arrington is a decent addition, but again, isn't the solution. I think you're roght Rev, Torain could be a contributor...but he's gotta show me he can stay healthy. He had a whole lot of injury problems for a young player. In a perfect world, the Broncos would pair Ward with a backup combo of whomever is healthy between Buckhalter/Arrington/Torain. This team needs a reliable starter; going with 10 backups isn't going to get it done, they found that out last season.
